Walking tiger across a back and shoulder

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large tiger walks forward towards the viewer, with its head at the shoulder blade and one front paw extended down the back. The stripes and fur are rendered with fine black linework and soft grey shading that gives the body depth and a realistic texture. The image is cropped to the back and upper arm against a plain black background, with the tiger's striped body curving across the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The crates from Calcutta came off the boat at dusk, and the foreman swore one of them was breathing. You were the night lamplighter at Scarrow Quay, the only man left awake when the tide turned, so he sent you down to check the lashings. The hold smelled of tar and wet jute. Behind the tea chests, something shifted its weight, and the boards gave a long, patient creak.

You lifted the lantern. Eyes first, two coins of amber, then the broad striped head, then the shoulders rolling forward like a tide coming in over sand. It was not a tiger in the way the harbour master would have meant the word. It was a tiger the way the sea is water: complete, unhurried, paying you no mind until it chose to. It walked past you, paw after paw, down the gangway and out onto the wet stones, and every gull on the sea wall lifted at once.

By morning the chandler's boy swore he had seen a striped shadow cross the bridge toward the headland. Nobody believed him, and nobody went looking. The crates were empty except for a single wet print on the planks, four toes and a broad pad, pressed as if the animal had stepped out of the wood itself.

You kept the lamp lit that winter all the same. On the nights the fog rolls thick off the water, you swear you can hear something climbing the cliff path, unhurried and certain of its way. You still leave the back gate unbolted when the mist comes in, and you have never once asked yourself why.
