Tiger and dragon tattoos on both thighs
Japanese · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two large tattoos cover the front of the thighs. The left thigh shows a dragon-like creature drawn in black linework with scale detail and flowing lines, alongside a hibiscus-style flower and petals. The right thigh shows a snarling tiger in black and grey shading, with maple leaves and a separate small leaf below, all set against a dark background.

The dragon came up out of the old shaft at Gwenmoor the spring the pumps failed, and nobody would say how it had got under the hill. It was long and grey-green, scaled like a herring, and its mane fanned out behind it like smoke from a wet chimney. Tom Ashe, who kept the tally in the lamp-room, swore it had eaten a whole cart of pit props and left the timber in neat splinters, as if it had been picking its teeth.

The tiger came down from the bracken above the workings in October, when the maples on the Scarth bank had turned red. It had no business in the valley, but nobody had the nerve to tell it so. It walked the lane between the chapel and the spoil heaps as though the ground had been laid out for its feet, and wherever it lay down, the leaves blew into shapes that the children tried to copy in the dust.
They fought for three nights over the hibiscus that grew against the chapel wall, though it was too cold for hibiscus and everyone knew it had been planted by a widow whose husband had gone to sea. The men lit lanterns and banged pans and got nowhere. On the fourth morning the dragon was gone back down the shaft, and the tiger sat by the wall with a single crimson bloom held in its jaws like a letter it had been asked to deliver.
When Tom went to the wall at first light, the petals were scattered on the step and the tiger had left one of them stuck to the mortar, where it stayed all winter, bright as a coal.
