Toucan with speech bubble on an arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A toucan perched on a branch, with a large yellow, orange and black beak and a teal-ringed eye. A speech bubble beside it reads I can you can toucan. Bold black outlines and flat, bright colour fills give it a classic traditional look.

Dear Aunt Maud, the bird is still in the hayloft and Dad has stopped pretending he did not see the sign on the gate. The toucan arrived in the back of a van from Carlisle in November, crated and sulking, with a card tied to his perch that said only 'Pay Mr Pryce on Tuesday'. Nobody in Hobb's Cross has paid Mr Pryce on any Tuesday in living memory, so we got the bird instead.

He talks, which is the trouble. Not proper words, exactly. He stands on the rail of the calf pen with his great orange beak tilted like a magistrate reading the paper, then he tells the milk churns the same thing every morning: 'I can, you can, toucan.' Mum says it is a sales pitch. Gran says he was a bought bird and is owed his shilling. Tom from the mill swears he heard the bird answer back when he asked if the pond would hold.
Last Thursday he got out. We searched the byres, the orchard and the lane with lanterns and our breath hanging white. Tom found him at last on the church wall, perched beside the bell rope, bobbing at a fox who was clearly not impressed. When Dad reached up, the toucan leaned down, nipped a button off his coat, and said it again, slower this time, as if he had decided we were the ones who needed teaching.
I've decided he stays. Come at Christmas and bring the cheap bread. He will want an audience.
