Traditional anchor with rope and flowers on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A traditional style anchor sits at the centre of the design, wrapped in a yellow and brown rope, with red five-petal flowers and dark teal leaves around it. Seagull outlines and a red-tipped top are set against plain skin, with a partial flower visible at the upper left edge. Bold black outlines frame flat red, teal and yellow fills, with grey shading on the anchor shank and rope.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fair pulled into Saltmarsh the week the ferryman drowned, so Tobias Rook had to carry the rides across the estuary himself. He had a rusted anchor off a wrecked brig, a barge with a split hull, and a length of hemp that Ada Pender sold him on credit from her rope tent. She did not ask what he meant to hold. Everybody in the town knew he would hold nothing but his own nerve.

He tied the rope three times round the anchor shank and wound the spare end through the barge's ring, then pushed off on the ebb. The current took the barge sideways. Gulls rose off the mudbanks in a scatter of white and wheeled above the mast, as if they were counting the horses. Halfway over, the rope bit into the ring and the barge began to turn in its own length like a dog after its tail.

Ada was on the far bank with her hands on her hips. She had seen the knot from the start and did nothing to stop him. When the barge swung toward the sandbar she ran down the slipway, knife out, and cut the hemp clean. The anchor went down without a sound. The barge drifted on, empty, and grounded gently in the mud beside the carousel's last horse, painted red, with its tail to the wind.

Tobias came ashore wet to the waist and said the rope had been a poor bargain. Ada said it had been a fair one, and she took the price of the anchor out of his wages in fish. At low tide the flukes still showed above the silt, red-tipped and rust-dark, and the gulls came down to sit on the iron as if they owned it.
