Anchor and roses on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large anchor runs down the thigh, with a pink rose at the crown and peach roses and small blue flowers trailing around the shank and flukes. The rope coiled around the shaft and the leaves add dimension, with soft shading on the metal and petals. Colour is used throughout, with pale pinks, peaches, blues and greens set against a grey-green anchor on warm skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marnie had been clearing the gatehouse for three weeks when the wall gave up its anchor. It lay under a fall of mortar and sea-green ivy, a grey iron thing as long as her arm, with a coil of rope still knotted through the ring. Her foreman, Dafydd, said the ship it belonged to had gone down before the castle was a ruin, back when the Tudors still bothered about the coast.

She carried it up to the keep at dusk because the light was better there. From the broken window she could see the harbour below, the grey boats tied at the quay, and beyond them the open water going pink. Someone had left roses in a jam jar on the sill, pale peach ones browning at the edges, and a sprig of small blue flowers tangled in the rope. She did not ask who. The village was small, and people left things at ruins.

Her grandmother used to say an anchor was only a promise to come back to the same place. Marnie thought that was nonsense until she tried to lift the thing and the rope came away in her hands, rotten through, with forget-me-nots pressed flat inside the coil like old letters. She sat on the cold step with the pieces in her lap for a long time.

In the morning she set the anchor back at the foot of the arch, where the sea wind could reach it, and wound a fresh length of rope round the shank. She pushed a handful of forget-me-not seeds into the cracks at its base. Then she chalked the date on the stone the way the masons used to, and went down to the quay to find out who had left the roses.
