Traditional back piece with eagle and ship
Traditional · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A bald man is seen from behind, with a large traditional back piece covering most of his back. An eagle with spread wings sits above a heart-shaped frame that holds a steamship at sea with smoke rising from its funnel, surrounded by flowers, leaves and a banner with stars. A snake coils around a skull on the upper neck, and the linework is bold with solid black areas and soft grey shading in the sea and sky.

The Ellen Rook had been blowing grey smoke over the breakwater since first light, and Tom Harrow knew she would not wait for the tide. He stood on the quay with a coil of tarred hemp over one shoulder and watched the funnel stack thicken against the sky, the way a man watches a dog he has decided not to chase.

Maud Pellow came down the chandlery steps with two mugs of tea, a rag tucked into her apron. "Stan's still in the Anchor," she said. "They need a stoker who can read a gauge. You can read a gauge."
"I can read a gauge."
"Then stop looking at the water and go."
He did not thank her. He drank half the tea, handed back the mug with the chipped rim that was always hers, and walked the gangplank with the hemp still on his shoulder. Below deck the heat came up through the iron like a held breath, and he could hear the firemen swearing in three languages as the coal went in.
By the time the harbour wall slid past, the town was a row of slate roofs and a single white chimney. Tom looked back and saw a small figure on the quay, not waving, just standing very still. Then the ship cleared the point, the wind swung round, and the smoke came down over the water in a long, slow ring. Maud had blown rings like that from her father's pipe when they were children, and she had always said the trick was to let the wind do the rest. The ring held its shape for almost a minute before the sea air tore it open, and Tom, who had sworn he would not look back, watched until nothing was left of it but a smudge on the horizon.
