Traditional flower band on ankle
Traditional · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A band-style tattoo wraps around the lower leg above the ankle, showing two red five-petalled flowers, a green leaf and a pattern of teal circles, orange diamonds and grey scalloped shapes. The linework is bold and dark, with flat, solid fills in red, green, teal and orange. The design is centred on the leg against a white paper towel, with the skin fully visible and the surrounding area cropped out.

The miller's youngest daughter carried bread up to Harrow Keep every morning, because the old lady in the roofless hall would take nothing from anyone who came by the road. The wall had split the winter the bell fell, and through the crack grew a ring of wild roses, two red blooms out of every knot of thorns, so thick a goat could not have pushed between them.

Maud, the widow, sat on a stone with a copper bowl of teal glaze in her lap, painting circles onto tiles with a goose feather. Her husband had laid the river wall himself, and the scalloped stones along its foot were the only thing in the valley the flood had never lifted. 'Bring me a leaf,' she said on the third morning, 'from the green one at the gate. Not a flower. The leaf.'
The roses opened for the girl without a scratch, the way roses do for people who are not in a hurry. At the gate the single green leaf was freckled with orange rust, and she pinched it free and wrapped it in the bread cloth. When she came back, Maud held it up to the light and laughed, the first time in a year.
'That was never a leaf,' Maud said. 'It is the piece of the wall that still remembers its shape. Press it where the river gets in and the stones will close over.' The girl pushed it into the mortar at the breach with her thumb, and by the thaw the crack had sealed around it, red blooms and all, and nobody in the valley could say which had mended which.
