Anime character with stretched arm on forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A colour tattoo of an anime-style character in a straw hat and red scarf sits at the top of the forearm, with an outstretched arm running down the skin. Black and grey shading in the background suggests waves or cloud and fades towards the wrist. The clenched fist of the arm is shown in the foreground, photographed from above on a white surface.

The gull took the pasty straight out of Dunric's fist, and that was the end of the calm part of the morning. Pell watched from the slipway as her brother did not shout, because he never shouted at gulls. He simply reached, and his arm kept going, out over the weed-dark slip, past the moored crab boats, over the green water where the tide dragged ropes of wrack like wet hair, until his knuckles closed round the bird's leg and it hung there, outraged, screaming at the harbour wall.

"Put it back," said Pell.
"It was mine."
"It was a pasty, Dun. It was never anyone's."
He reeled the arm in hand over hand, and the gull dropped the crust with great dignity and flew off to insult someone else. Old Mrs Tregaskis on the bench clapped twice. The arm shrank back to the ordinary length of any man's arm, and nobody on Porthgwidden quay looked twice any more, since Dunric had been doing this since he was six and had given up apologising for it years ago.
Then the ferry horn sounded across the bay, and Pell saw what she had been dreading all week. The tide was turning early, the mackerel boats were still out past the Mouse, and the lifeboat was idling by the breakwater with its lamps unlit. Her brother was already rolling up his sleeve, squinting at the grey horizon where their father's boat should have appeared an hour ago.
"Dun," she said. "Not that far."
He was already reaching.
