Traditional leg sleeve with roses and an anchor

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A leg rests in a bath of foam, covered by a traditional-style tattoo sleeve of red roses, a teal and blue anchor wound with a rope, a red heart and pink flowers. Thick black outlines and flat, solid fills define the motifs, with some soft shading in the roses. Colour ink dominates the composition, and a rose on the hand is visible at the lower left.

The rope had gone soft at the splice again, and Edie Marlow swore at it the way her grandfather had taught her, low and without heat. Beyond the breakwater the fleet was coming in on the flood, lamps showing green and then red as the boats turned for the harbour mouth.

Her brother Danny had shipped out in March with a borrowed oilskin and a pocket full of coins. He came back in April with his arm inked from wrist to elbow: roses first, then an anchor wound with rope, a red heart pinned beneath it. Edie told him an anchor was a daft thing to put on a man who could not swim. He said that was exactly why.

The Constance came in last. Her foresail had been torn away off the Dogger, and Danny was not at the rail. Edie spent the night in the net loft splicing, fingers numb, working three strands back into a length that could hold a mooring. By dawn the coil was done, and she carried it down the slipway to the buoy where the boat rocked, grey-hulled, her brass lamp still burning.

Danny was on the foredeck, hauling the warp hand over hand as if the night had been an ordinary one. He looked up and saw the coil on her shoulder. She threw the end across and he caught it, then made it fast to the cleat with the same knot he had been cursing at for a fortnight. Hold, she said. He looked down at the anchor on his arm, the rope looped round it like a promise, and laughed for the first time since March.
