A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Now move closer to the fire, because it won't hold a story for long, and this one is about a raccoon called Tobias Quill who lived in a hollow oak at the edge of Hazelbrook wood. He would not eat an acorn until he had washed it three times in the millrace, and he kept the cleanest ones tucked in a hat box under his roots, which is more care than most of us give our own teeth.

One grey February the miller's daughter, Nell Harrow, came down to the water with a cracked pitcher and a question. Her father had sold the mill wheel for debts, and she wanted to know how a creature could look so content with so little. Tobias told her the river was a poor master but an honest teacher. He taught her which stones held the cold longest, which ferns meant the ground was soft, and how to sit still enough that the kingfishers forgot she was there. In return she brought him bread wrapped in a dish cloth, which he considered a fair exchange.

The flood came in March and took the mill, the hat box, and most of the wood's good sense. When the water dropped, Nell found the oak standing, and the hollow ringed with briar and wild rose, and the old acorn cups hung with tiny yellow lamps that gave a faint warm light after dark. Tobias sat in the middle of it all with his mask neat and his paws folded, looking as if he had planned it himself. Nell still walks past that tree on her way to market, and she still says good morning to the raccoon, who still never answers.
