Floral leg sleeve with peonies and roses
Japanese · Calf · Colour · Photo
A bare leg rests in a green bath, with the foot at the top of the frame and the tattooed section running up the shin and thigh. Large peonies and roses are outlined in bold black linework, with heavy black shading behind the dark green leaves and smaller blooms filling the gaps. The palette is dominated by reds, pinks and greens, with the untattooed skin and the pale bath giving the composition a soft, neutral backdrop.

Dear Tom,

The peonies came out in the end, though not the way the seed packet promised. Mr Pargeter from the chandlery swore the salt wind would finish them by June, so I dug the bed deeper and packed it with bladderwrack, and this morning there were nine heads the size of teacups, crimson going to pink at the edges, sitting in the dark leaves as if they had been let in on a secret. The roses by the back wall took the spray better. They always were the stubborn ones.
Mrs Adair has taken the room over the kitchen for the summer. She is a widow from Leeds with a steamer trunk full of books and a habit of running her bath at odd hours, which the copper boiler does not appreciate. Last Tuesday she came down the garden path with her skirt hitched and asked if she might have a few stems for her windowsill, and I gave her the whole lot before I could think better of it. She put them in the green jug from the scullery and said the room smelled like a wedding in a chapel.
I have been thinking about that since, and about you on the Calliope, somewhere past the Hebrides with nothing but grey water and Hughie's snoring for company. When you come home in September I want the front room papered, the crooked chair mended, and a bunch of peonies on the table, even if they are the last of the year. Bring the sea back in your coat if you must. I will put it in a jar and let it sit with the flowers.
Your loving sister, Nell
