Traditional tattoos across both legs
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
Two legs are raised towards the top of the frame, with black open-toe platform sandals and strap ankle detail visible. The tattoos are bold, outlined traditional designs with solid fills, including red roses, a skull and a sun with a face, with smaller motifs between them. The ink is mainly colour, with reds, greens and yellows, set against a pale floral wallpaper and a white metal bed.

The sign went up on a Tuesday, and by Thursday Mr Pardoe had painted the sun on it with a face, because he said a sun without one was only a lamp. He kept his brushes in his breast pocket like pencils and talked to the paint while he worked. Ruth held the ladder and asked why the roses on the shop windows had to be so red. He said red was the only colour the salt air didn't eat before breakfast.

The bicycles arrived on the Friday boat, twelve black machines with brass bells on the handlebars and not a scratch between them. Pardoe took the first one out to the cliff road before anyone was up and came back with his moustache beaded in fog. After that the bells rang along the front at six every morning, and a thin boy from the chandler's went pedalling past with crab lines he had no business carrying.
On the last Sunday in September the gale took the Sunrise sign clean off its bracket and laid it face down in the gutter. Ruth found it at dawn with a cracked corner and a sun that had lost its smile. Pardoe was already out on the cliff road on the one bicycle he had painted himself, the one with a skull on the mudguard, which he claimed was for the boy's sake and not his own. He came back at noon with the boy riding ahead of him and the basket empty.
'Lines are lifted,' he said, 'and the boat's in.' He hung the sign again that afternoon and painted the sun's mouth a little wider, so that it looked as if it knew something about the weather that nobody else in town had worked out yet.
