Traditional lighthouse and anchor flash design

Traditional · Colour · Flash

The drawing shows a striped red and white lighthouse with a lit top, set against dark clouds, a sun-lit sky, a small sailing ship and blue waves. An oval rope border encloses the scene, with a red flower and leaves at the top and a red anchor with green foliage below. Bold black outlines define the forms, with grey shading in the clouds and colour filling the lighthouse, sea and foliage.

Dear Ada, the last train from Penhallow went out at twenty to nine tonight with one passenger and a crate of mackerel, and I stood on the platform until its lamps were gone round the headland. You'll laugh, but I kept looking up at your light. The beam swept over the cutting the way it always does, red stripe, white stripe, and when the cloud came down over the bay I could see only the glow at the top, like someone holding a match behind a curtain.

The stationmaster's wife asked after you. She wants to know whether the new lamp oil has come, and whether the gulls are still nesting on the gallery rail. I told her you'd write when you were ready. Mr Tregear has put the anchor from the old signal box on the platform for the summer flowers, red paint and all, and says it looks a deal smarter than the bench. I told him it looked like a sailor who had fallen asleep in the geraniums.

Here is the thing I meant to say. On Thursday the sea came up over the breakwater and the eight-fifteen was held an hour at the junction. I sat in the signal box with the lever in my hand and watched your light turn, and I counted the flashes against the clock because counting is what I do when I am frightened. Nineteen, twenty. I thought of you on the gallery in the spray.

Come down on the Saturday train if the weather lets you. Bring the ledger. I will meet you on the platform, and we can stand under the flower basket and see whose light is brighter.
