Tomas Reid had counted the stripes on the tower so often that he could recite them in the dark: black, white, black, white, and between them the red thread the lamp-makers painted on so ships would know it. The relief boat should have come on the Thursday. By the Saturday the tide had gone out and come back four times without anyone to watch it, and the mainland mountains had sunk under a slate-coloured lid of cloud.

The logbook on the table held one thing that was not a number. Ada had pressed a red flower between its pages the summer she rowed him out, a bloom from the cliff path, flat now and the colour of an old coat button. He had not written in the book since Monday. Gulls came and went past the lantern room. Two small birds had been riding the wind above the rocks all morning, ahead of the weather, and he had started to think of them as the only company he was likely to get.
At first light on Sunday a dinghy grated on the landing shelf. It held no relief keeper and no paraffin, only a boy from the village with a sack of bread and a note in his sister's hand. The note said the harbour master had kept the boat in port, that the cloud would break by noon, and that she had left the kettle warm in the cottage window, which was the one thing she had ever promised to do.
Tomas read it twice, then lifted the flower from the logbook and tucked it behind the glass of the lamp room, where the first sun would find it. The stripes turned slowly in the light. He wrote the date in the book, and under it, in his careful hand, the word relieved.
