Nell Harrow had hung the hoop above the byre door the winter her father stopped coming down from the tops, and every night after that she checked the web of sinew and red thread before she latched the gate. The valley had been quiet since the first snow, but the wolves had come back to the ridge, and the shepherds said the howling on the scree meant something was owed.

On the night of the sleet she heard it closer than ever, a long rising note that bent halfway and broke into three short calls. She went out with the lantern and found the grey bitch standing in the trodden snow where the pens met the wall, her muzzle lifted, singing at the cloud. Behind her, on the rocks, the pack's youngest had got a foreleg caught in a fence wire. Nell knelt in the slush, cut it free with the shears she used for fleeces, and wrapped the shivering thing in her coat.
The old women in the village said a dreamcatcher holds the bad dreams and lets the good ones slip through to the sleeper. Nell had thought that nonsense until morning, when she unhooked the ring from the beam and found three grey feathers caught in its web, bent and wet, though the door had been barred all night.
In spring, when the ridge had gone green again, she climbed with the pup in a sack and set it down among the rocks. The howl that answered her came from very close, so close she felt it in her ribs, and when she turned for home the feathers on the hoop above her door were stirring, though there was no wind at all.
