Blue and purple owl on upper back

Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo

A stylised owl with spread wings is shown in flight, with large yellow eyes, a white chest and talons gripping at the bottom. The bold black outlines and smooth colour shading in blue, purple and yellow are set against a dark, smudged background. The tattoo fills most of the frame on bare skin across the upper back, with a small partial tattoo visible at the left edge.

Dear Tom, I've decided to write this down before I lose my nerve about Saturday. The owl that got into the sports hall during the reunion was the only thing in the building that knew what it was doing. It came in through the high window above the badminton lines, blue at the wings and purple where the light caught them, and it perched on the climbing rope with its yellow eyes fixed on Mr Pardoe, who was still telling everyone about the 1989 relay.

Nobody screamed. Janet Ferris, who once locked me in the cloakroom for an entire dinner break, simply stood up and held her cardigan out like a net. We all stood about in our name badges with our wine going warm while the bird walked along the rope, wings half open, looking at us as if we were the ones who had come back to be marked.

Then it dropped, slid across the polished floor in one long swoop and left by the fire door at knee height. Janet said it was a sign. Mr Pardoe said it was a tawny with no business being in Kent. I think it was just a bird that had been out all night and fancied the warm air of a room full of people who had forgotten what they used to be frightened of.

I've enclosed the feather it left on the scorer's table. It's blue at the tip and purple further down, the way the sky goes before anything's been decided. Keep it. You still owe me for the cloakroom.
