Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A swallow in flight sits near the shoulder above a pin-up woman in a wide-brimmed hat, with roses and leaves filling the lower arm. Bold black outlines and solid fills are used throughout, in red, yellow, green, grey and black ink. The photograph is taken from the side and cropped below the chin, with the wearer in a white vest against a plain indoor background.

The swallow was the first thing Mavis Rookby ever paid for with her own money, and she never let Dougie forget it. Three weeks out of Pompey on the Ada Lowe, the bosun had her sitting on an upturned bucket on the foredeck, a needle in one hand and a pot of soot ink in the other, telling her to hold still or he would give her a freckle shaped like Ireland. She held still. Her mother had told her a swallow meant you would always find your way home, and Mavis figured that was worth a pinch.

The pin-up came later, in Valparaiso, from a shop with a painted parrot in the window and a man who called himself Captain Gaff though he had never been near a ship. He worked by a paraffin lamp with the door open to the harbour noise. He asked her what sort of woman she wanted under the bird, and she said one who would not wait for a man to hold her coat, so he drew a lady in a wide hat with the brim turned up like a ship's sail, and filled the hat in red because red was what Mavis had been wearing the night she bought the first drink.
They made it back to Pompey in the spring. Her mother read the swallow, said nothing, and then looked at the lady for a long time. "Well," she said at last, "she's got more sense than your father ever did." Mavis laughed until the kettle boiled over, and that was the only blessing she ever needed.
