Black and grey eagle on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large black and grey tattoo of a bird, possibly an eagle, with raised wings and long, flowing tail feathers that wrap down the arm. The feathers are rendered with layered shading and fine detail, and the head is turned with a sharp, defined beak. The image is shown twice side by side as mirrored views of the same arm against a blue sleeveless top.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the gutter, it runs where the cobbles dip. You want the bird that came over the rooftops of Saltergate on the night the gas failed? Then hush. It was black as a coal scuttle, and when its wings opened they blotted out the lamp above the chandler's door. Nobody on that street had seen a bird that size, and nobody to this day agrees on what it was.

Old Ada Pennick kept the pawn hatch at the bottom of the lane. She had a length of blue silk she'd been saving for a wedding that never came, and on the night of the bird she sat on her step with a cold pipe, counting the lamps that had gone out. The bird came down the lane low, its tail feathers trailing behind it like smoke from a ship already sunk. It landed on the bridge rail and turned its head slowly, the way a clerk turns to look at a debtor, and it looked at her silk.
"Pay me in that," it said, in a voice like a ledger being shut. Ada had been cheated by every man in Saltergate, so she said no. The bird spread its tail, and the feathers came down the bridge wall like a serpent, curling round the iron posts toward her doorway. Where they touched the silk, the blue drained to grey, then to black, then to something soft as ash. Ada held on to the cloth until her knuckles ached, and then, for reasons she never explained, she let it go.
The bird took the silk and left one feather pinned to the hatch in its place. In the morning the ledger had a new entry, written in copperplate: Received, with thanks. Interest accrues.
