Traditional flash drawing of a yellow five-petalled flower with a red centre, green and blue leaves and brown thorn-like buds, on a speckled cream background.

Traditional yellow flower with red centre

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A single flower with five yellow petals and a red inner ring surrounds a dark centre with black stamens. Bold black outlines, soft yellow and red shading and green and blue leaves with striped detailing sit around the bloom, with brown spiky buds at the top and left. The design is centred on a textured cream background with small black dots scattered around the edges.

"Your mother cut these every Easter," he said, nodding at the tray on the bench. He had kept the old tin cutter in his apron pocket for forty years, and it still had flour packed into the grooves. Nell pressed it into the sweet dough and lifted it out clean: five soft lobes, a ring for the middle, the same flower that had faded on the lid of the biscuit tin above the sink since before either of them could read.

"The lease ends in June," she said. "Nobody's going to want this at the new place."

"Then bake one more batch for the people who do." He dipped a finger in the yolk and dabbed a dot at the centre of a bun, then another at the edge, the way his wife had done. "The dots are the bit people forget. They're what makes it look like it's been painted by someone in a hurry."

The sun came up behind the lighthouse while the trays went in. By seven the bakery smelled of butter and scorched sugar, and the first customers were pressing their noses to the glass. Nell took the last bun from the rack, the one with a petal that had come out a little crooked, and set it aside on the windowsill, where the light could reach it.
