Transit map tattoo on lower back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a network of thick dark lines with circular station markers, arranged like an underground transit map across the lower back. Small labels and text are rendered in fine grey linework, with areas of grey shading behind some of the route blocks. The design is in black and grey ink and spreads diagonally across the centre of the frame, with dark clothing at the bottom edge.

The trouble with the Cawley Loop map was that nobody had ever ridden it. Ada Pellow drew it at her kitchen table in the winter of 1958, a set square in one hand and a cup of cold tea in the other, and she kept every line at forty-five degrees because a train, she maintained, had no business turning at any other angle. Her husband thought the stations were too close together. Her son thought the names were made up. They were, mostly. Ada had named each one after a shop she missed.

When the power failed across the valley that February, the council sent round printed copies of the real network, which nobody could read by torchlight. Ada's sheet was pinned inside the back door of the Dolphin, so the landlord, Mr Tennant, took it down and carried it into the cellar. Every hour someone came down the steps to ask him which line got you to the hospital. He traced the thick black route with a bitten pencil, counted the circles, and told them to walk east until they hit the grey shading, which Ada had meant as the river.
Her granddaughter came to collect the sheet in March and found it so creased that the station names had almost worn away. She laid it on the bar, smoothed it flat, and read the names out one by one, the way you might read a register. Nobody corrected her. The lamps came back on the Thursday. Mr Tennant kept the map, and on quiet nights he would sit with it under the bar light and follow the lines with his finger, taking the long way round to places he had never been.
