Red poppies and lavender on the side of the torso
Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo
A cluster of red poppies with one bud and open flowers, shown with purple lavender sprigs and green leaves and stems that curl upward. The shading is soft and realistic, with darker reds at the centres of the blooms and fine detail on the petals. The design sits diagonally on bare skin against a plain background, with the top of a pair of jeans visible below it.

Dear Tom,

The lavender in the box by the scullery door has finally caught, so you can stop worrying that I have let Mother's bed go to ruin. Mrs Pryce from the chapel says the cold snap has done for the early poppies, but the ones along the wall came up red as pennies anyway, and I have been going out each morning with my apron full of their papery heads to see which have set seed.
I have packed you a tin of them, wrapped in brown paper and a page of the Gazette so the customs men can read something improving while they search it. Don't sow them in the hold of that ship and expect them to thank you. Keep them dry, keep them out of the salt, and when you reach Colombo find a verandah with proper sun and a boy who knows how to dig.
The lavender cuttings are tied with garden string in the second parcel. Mr Hosking says they will strike if you keep them moist, though he says that about everything, including his second wife. Please write when you land and tell me whether the sea looks as grey from the deck as it does from the pier, because I have been standing there every evening trying to decide whether to come after you, and the tide keeps answering no.
Your loving sister, Nell
