Map-style linework across a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo covers the outer and front of the upper leg and continues toward the knee, showing a fine-line design that resembles a plan or map with concentric circular patterns, hatched shapes and scattered dots. The linework is thin and even in black ink with no shading or colour, and the design wraps around the leg with a dense central medallion on the thigh. The photograph is taken at close range against a dark background.

Dear Hetty, The stakes went in at Caddon Flat on Tuesday, and the sand had already filled the holes we dug for them by the next morning. Mr Okonedo says we should stop fighting the wind and draw the town the way it wants to be drawn, so I have spent three nights with the lamp turned low, inking rings around the one good well like ripples on a pond.

The plan is simple enough. Every house sits on a spoke that runs from the well to the rim of the circle, and the dots are the sumps where rain collects when it bothers to come at all. Where the lines cross, I have drawn the lanes the carts will use, though no cart has yet found them. Yesterday the driver of the water lorry asked me which way was north, and I pointed at the centre of the sheet, because everything on it bends back to that well.
Last night I held the drawing up to the window, and the road outside caught the moonlight. It ran straight out of Caddon, then split into two faint tracks, and both of them curved round toward the spot I had marked as a well. I checked the survey twice. Nobody had dug it. The desert had simply done what I'd drawn, and I could not tell which had come first, my line or the ground.
I have started a second sheet for the far side of the ridge. Come in spring if you can, bring the good pens, and walk the outer ring with me. Count the dots. There are always one or two more than the survey says. Your loving brother, Tomas.
