Treble and bass clef on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single treble clef with two dots beside a bass clef mark sits vertically on the inner wrist. The tattoo is filled in solid black with smooth, bold edges and some slight texture visible in the ink. The plain pale skin and blurred background keep the focus on the centred design.

You learn the treble clef on the stairwell of Keel House, because the lift has been broken since March and the upright piano lives on the ninth floor. Mrs Okonkwo makes you copy the symbol onto the back of a council letter before she lets you touch a key. The upright has three sticky notes, a cigarette burn on the lid and a middle C that sounds like a kettle. "It curls like a question," she says, tapping the paper with a biro. "Start at the bottom, go round the line, come back up." The bass clef she draws as a fat hook with two dots beside it. "Those dots mean the notes sit lower down, where the boiler groans and the pipes knock."

You practise the left hand until the man in 4B bangs on his ceiling with a broom handle. You stop, then start again softer, tucking the bass line under the melody the way she showed you. On the Thursday he knocks back, twice, in time with the bar you've been stuck on for a fortnight. You don't stop that time. You play the whole phrase through to the end, and somewhere below you a chair scrapes closer to the floor.
When you move out in the autumn, you take the council letter with you, folded small in your coat pocket. Later you have the clef inked on the inside of your wrist, just where the pulse sits, so you never have to look for the place to start. Now when a lift breaks in some other block, you count the stairs against it, and nine floors come out to exactly four bars.
