Black and grey tattoo on a thigh of a treble clef surrounded by music notes, a shaded star, a flower and a small butterfly.

Treble clef and music notes on a thigh

Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A treble clef sits at the centre of the design, with loose music notes, a curved swoosh, and a shaded five-pointed star below it. A grey-shaded flower and a small butterfly sit above the clef on the upper thigh. The linework is dark and bold with soft grey shading, and the design is entirely in black and grey ink against the skin.

The hall smelled of floor polish and squash, just as it did in 1989. Someone had wheeled the old upright piano out from the music room, and the B flat still stuck halfway down. Dean Pryce, who once sang the top line of Shenandoah with his eyes shut, now sells conservatories in Wigan and wore a tie with cartoon cats on it. Nobody asked me what I did. We stood in a loose ring and hummed the first four bars of the Christmas medley, and every one of us came in a beat late, the way we always did.

What I wanted to tell you is about the summer you let us stay behind after the concert. You made us draw our own clef on the back of the programme. Mine came out like a question mark with a tail, and you said it looked like it had been dancing. I still have that programme. Folded into the back of it is the paper star you cut out for my solo, gone soft at the points from years of being carried about.

I brought it tonight. I didn't hand it over. I left it on the piano lid for whoever comes in early on Saturday to open the windows, with a note that says it belongs to the choir.
