Treble clef and script quote on upper back
Lettering · Back · Mixed · Photo
A pink and blue treble clef sits over a black five-line staff with several musical notes, with a blue flame-like shape behind the clef. Black script lettering above and below reads His Wounds Have Paid My Ransom, with bold outlines and soft shading in the coloured areas. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame against smooth skin, with the edge of the shoulder blade visible at the top left.

The organ at Capel Bethel had been dead since Easter, so Mr Lewis sang the first line of every hymn himself, loud and a little flat, and the congregation followed him the way they always had. Nobody expected the new schoolteacher to know the tunes by heart, but Nia Owen did, and on the Thursday before the funeral she stood up in the vestry and said the anthem was pitched wrong.

The anthem was for Dai Griffiths, who had fished out of Llanwnda for fifty years and never once sung in tune. Mr Lewis had copied the words in his careful hand: His wounds have paid my ransom. The treble clef sat at the top of the staff like a hook. Nia pointed at the sopranos' bars and said they had been sitting a tone too high since before the war, and that the old pencil marks showed it. Mr Lewis said his father had taught it that way. Nia said his father had also let the chapel roof leak for thirty years and nobody had ever asked him to fix that.
They argued until the paraffin lamps guttered. Then Mr Lewis took his hat and walked down to the harbour to look at Dai's boat, which had been hauled up on the slip with its blue paint peeling from the bow. He came back with a tin of paint and a brush, and said nothing about the notes. On Saturday the sopranos sang lower than they ever had, the basses dropped under them, and the sound rolled out over the chapel wall and across the bay like something being carried home.
