Treble clef and heart tattoo
Mixed · Photo
A treble clef forms the left side of a heart outline, with the clef drawn in solid black and the heart edged in dark red. The linework is smooth and bold, with the clef's curls and tail sitting neatly inside the heart shape. The plain, softly lit background of pale skin keeps the design as the single focus of the frame.

Hush now, the brazier can wait. Hesperos the lyre-maker had a daughter called Ioli, and she could not abide a silent string. Every morning she sat on the harbour wall at Miletus and sang the gulls down from the masts, and every evening her father scratched her tunes onto wax tablets with a bone stylus, because nobody yet had a mark for a melody.

One wet winter the wax went soft in the damp and the marks slumped into a knot. Ioli carried the tablet up to the scribes by the agora. They squinted and muttered, and a clerk named Dorion said the sign for a rising note looked like a gamma that had fallen asleep, curled tight at the foot. Ioli laughed so hard she dropped the tablet in a puddle, and the puddle, being a gossip, passed the news straight to the fishermen.
Dorion took the sign and made it his own. He drew the curl large at the top, let the tail sweep down into a long loop, and pressed the whole thing onto a clean tablet while the fishermen's wives watched him work. One of them, a widow called Thessa, took the stylus from him and drew a heart around the lower half, saying a tune was only a heart that had learned to climb.
So when you see a man in the agora with that mark on his shoulder, black as pitch with a red edge hugging it, you know he has a song he has not sung yet. Ioli's melodies were written down at last, and the heart went round them like a fence, to keep the gulls from stealing them back.
