Treble clef and stars on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a bare foot raised on its heel, showing a treble clef with wavy staff lines that trail down towards the foot. Small four-pointed stars and dots scatter around the clef and across the top of the foot. The linework is thin and mostly solid black, with no visible shading, and the plain dark background keeps the focus on the ankle.

In the fishing town of Porthaven the sea had gone quiet for three winters, and the boats stayed tied up at the quay. Old Maud Trewin said it was because nobody remembered the sea's tune any more. The harbour master laughed at her until the herring stopped coming too.

So a girl called Ivy Penhallow took her grandfather's fiddle down to the breakwater at dusk. She had never played for anyone but the gulls. She tuned the strings twice, then began a slow air her grandfather hummed when he mended nets. As the notes went out over the water, the wet stones gleamed, and small hard stars rose from the foam and hung above the harbour like dropped sequins.
The sea answered by lifting. A line of silver came up out of the dark and bent into the shape of the old clef painted on the lifeboat's bow. It followed the music in ripples, rising where the notes rose and falling where they fell. Ivy played until her fingers split, and the fish came back in a long shining staff that wound all the way to the mouth of the harbour.
At dawn the boats went out and came home heavy. Ivy never took a fee for it. She kept the fiddle, and each dusk she walked to the breakwater with salt in her hair. Whenever a child asked why the sea was singing again, she said only that somebody had to keep time.
