Matching broken heart anklet tattoos on two feet
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet are shown against a black background, each with a tattoo of a heart pendant on a chain anklet above the ankle. The heart is split into two halves, and each half carries partial lettering in a simple, uniform outline. The shading is light and soft, the image is in greyscale, and the feet are centred with the toes in view.

The carrier would not wait for the snow to make up its mind, so the two girls split the copper token on the flat stone of the inn yard with a cold chisel and Hob's borrowed hammer. The smith in Sallow had stamped the words in a hurry and run short of room, so one half carried BE FR and the other ST NDS. Neither girl laughed at the joke. They spat on their palms and shook.

Ruth took the lower road to the lowland mills, and Maud stayed at the top with her goats. The agreement was that each would thread her half onto a chain of river beads and wear it at the ankle, so that every step she took would knock against the place where the other half should be. Old Agnes at the crossroads sold them the beads for a penny each and said a thing worn that close to the ground would never be lost.
Ruth's half went dull in the mill dust. Maud's went bright from the goat track. For eleven winters the pass sent no news, only a carter now and then who swore he heard a faint chime on the ridge at dusk, though nobody else could hear it over the wind. Maud took to walking the ridge at dusk with her skirts hitched up, listening.
In the thaw she found Ruth's half under the cairn where they had once sat to split the copper, wrapped in a strip of blue wool with no note at all. She sat on the stone and fitted the two pieces together. The broken edges met exactly, and the letters ran on across the seam, and the gap where the smith had run out of room was filled by nothing but the cold chisel's bite, which was enough to read by.
