Flowers and berries down the backs of both legs
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the backs of a pair of legs, each with a black and grey botanical tattoo. A blossom sits above the knee on each leg, joined by a fine single line running down to a cluster of blossoms and berries on the calf, with a small bee beside the left cluster. The linework is fine and the berries are shaded with dotted and hatched texture, all in greyscale on a sepia-toned background.

The line was meant to be temporary, a length of waxed twine pegged from the first blossom of the year down to the strawberry bed, so the pickers could find the rows in the March fog. Ada Penhallow strung it herself from the top of the orchard wall, standing on an upturned crate with a mouthful of pegs and her coat buttoned wrong.

Her nephew Tom thought it looked untidy. He said so on the Sunday he came to help with the crates, and she told him untidy things were usually the ones that worked. The fog rolled up off the river every morning that April. The pickers walked the line with one hand out, touching the twine the way you'd feel along a banister in the dark, and the rows came up clean under their knees.
A bee found it first. Ada watched from the kitchen window one morning as a fat striped thing worked its way down the twine from the blossom, pausing at every knot as if it were reading. Tom laughed and called it a sign. Ada said it was a bee with sense, and went back to her tea going cold on the sill.
The year she died, Tom pulled the line down to clear the wall for a new shed. The next spring he found the bee circling the bare pegs at the foot of the bed, and he stood in the cold longer than he meant to. Then it rose, went round twice, and came down the wall where the twine had been, straight to the berries, as though nobody had ever taken it away.
