A black and grey drawing of a treble clef with a pointed blade shape at its top. Two ribbon banners wind around the clef and carry the words I AM MARRIED TO THE MUSIC and FOR BETTER OR WORSE. The linework is bold and sketchy, with grey shading and spray-like speckling across a pale background.

Mrs Hollis had already cut the cake twice before the vicar noticed the knife was still in her hand, and she was pointing it at the back row of the choir as if they owed her a rest. Ned leaned over the trestle table with a paper plate and reminded her, quietly, that the wedding was over and the band had not yet been paid.

She had married Ned Hollis in the spring of 1961 in the chapel at Thorncombe Bottom, and the ceremony had gone the way she wanted, which was to say it ran a minute short because the organist had skipped the second hymn. Ned had stood beside her with his hat in both hands and his face doing the patient thing it did whenever a rehearsal ran late. She had promised him for better or worse. She had meant it as a practical clause, the way one agrees to the terms of a lease.

Forty years on, the worse had arrived in the form of a cornet solo she could not get right, and the better had been Thursday evenings in the church hall, forty people breathing in time because she had asked them to. Ned still came to every concert. He sat in the third row with his programme folded into a fan and mouthed the words to the carols, though he had never once sung them in tune.

When the last plate was taken away, she wiped the knife on a napkin and found that the blade had left a thin silver line through the icing, curving down from the top tier like a clef. Ned took the knife, turned it over, and laughed until he had to sit down. He said the music had finally got a slice of the cake.
