Tribal tree with spiralling roots

Black and grey · Flash

A bold black tribal-style tree with a thick, swirling trunk, flame-like branches and roots that spread across the lower half of the page. The linework is solid and uniform, with tapering strokes and spiral details, and faint pencil guidelines remain visible beneath the ink. The drawing is in black ink only on lined paper, with no shading or colour.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The road south of Carrow Wells ran so straight that the heat bent it into a pool at every mile, and by noon the carter had stopped counting the posts. His mule knew the way better than he did. What it did not know was the tree, a black thing standing alone where no tree had any right to be, its trunk twisted like a rope wrung dry.

Travellers said the roots went down past the bones of three towns to a spring nobody had seen. Its branches were flames that did not burn, and every spiral in its bark was a question it had asked the sky and never been answered. The carter got down and laid his palm against the trunk, which was warm as a loaf. Under his boots the roots shifted, a slow turning, as if something beneath had heard him.

He had come for water for his daughter, who lay fevered in the cart. The old woman at the last well had told him to ask the tree for nothing, only to tell it what he had lost. So he talked. He told it about the flood that took the orchard, the brother who went north and never wrote, the mule he had nearly sold. The branches stirred though there was no wind, and the spirals in the trunk began to turn, one by one, like a lock being worked.

When he looked down, the roots had cut a channel through the sand, and water was rising in it, clear and cold. He filled his skins until his arms ached. Back in the cart his daughter opened her eyes and asked where they were. "Almost home," he said, though it was four days yet, and the tree behind him kept its own counsel, its roots drinking deep for whoever came next.
