Black and grey flower on upper back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the upper back of a person with dark hair tied up, viewed from behind. A large flower sits centrally between the shoulder blades, built from soft, feathered black and grey brushstrokes with scattered ink dots and a fine dotted line running downwards. The image is warm-toned with a blurred background, which keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The bill has to be dry by Thursday, and the ink won't cooperate in this damp barn behind Pickering's yard. You kneel on yesterday's newspaper with the big brush loaded, the one Mother Ansel swore came from a Shanghai sign shop, and you try to paint the last bloom the Marvellous Vaneys will ever need printed on their posters. Outside, the lorries sit with their tyres sinking into the mud.

Everyone has already gone. Ada took a contract on a cruise ship out of Southampton, the strongman sold his bell to a scrapyard in Hull, and the two clowns who did the sad routine went to a care home in Skegness to teach it to the residents. Only Dunstan, the old grey horse, is left, and he watches you from his stall with the patience of someone who has heard the show is ending before.
The brush keeps flicking. Each time your wrist gives, a bead of black lands where a petal should be, and you stop swearing and let it stay. A bloom, a splash, a few dots like seeds. You draw one thin line down from the base of the flower, the way the rope used to drop from the high bar, and only then see what you have made. The line is the rope, and the bloom is the chalk dust that hung over the ring every evening for forty years.
You sign the bill with your own name rather than the company's and pin it to the gate. By morning someone has torn it down for kindling, but a fleck of black stays on the heel of your hand for a week, a small flower nobody asked for.
