Tree in a circle with birds on upper back

Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a bare tree with dense, spreading branches and exposed roots enclosed in a solid black circle. Small birds lift from the upper branches and fly off to the right, fading into the skin. The ink is solid black with clean edges on a pale, softly lit back, with the frame cropped at the shoulder.

On the eighth winter a single bird came back over the ridge in a snow squall, dropped onto the lowest bough, and sang once in a voice that sounded exactly like her. Then the whole flock followed, settling into the branches until the oak looked like it was wearing black leaves. Her mother walked up the frozen path with a lantern and found, between the roots, a ring on a cord, and a note in a hand she knew: The hearth is cold. Come and keep the oak company, Mam.
