Tree line and birds on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A tattoo of a sparse row of trees with thin trunks and branches, a faint horizon line beneath them, and a few small birds in the sky above. The linework is delicate and the shading is soft, giving depth to the trees in a single blue-black ink. The arm is photographed at an angle against a dark grey top and a pale background, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

He said a child's hands were too quick to be trusted with a root.

Most of them took. The ones on the north edge went first, bent flat by the March wind off the Wash, and he replaced those himself until he couldn't climb the bank any more. By then the line ran straight as a ruled pencil mark across the flat, the horizon sitting just beneath it like a sentence waiting for its full stop.
I came back the year after the funeral with a tin of his tobacco I was never going to smoke and a notebook to count what was left. Thirty-one standing. Rooks in the top branches, and a flock of small birds that lifted out of the stubble whenever the tractor turned, scattering like someone had shaken a handful of pepper across the sky.
I wrote thirty-one in the book, then sat on the bank until the light went blue. After a while I crossed it out and wrote thirty-two, because a sapling had come up from a fallen seed on the south side, thin as a bootlace and no higher than my knee. Grandfather would have pulled it. I left it where it was.
