Mountains, moon and leaves on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single-needle style tattoo inside an oval frame shows a mountain range with a rising sun behind the peaks, a crescent moon and small stars above, and a rounded fruit or stone with leafy sprigs at the base. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with parallel hatching lines filling the sky and the lower slopes for texture. The design sits on pale skin and is centred within the frame of the photograph against a dark background.

The snow had reached the second terrace by the time Brother Tomas admitted he could not drag the quince tree down the mountain alone. Abbot Ruadh had said nothing when the boy first dug it from the scree below the chapel. He had only pressed his thumbs into the wet root ball and nodded, as if a sapling climbing a mountain by itself was no great wonder.

They lashed it to a sled of ash boards and set off before the bell, the moon a thin paring over the col and the stars so hard and near that Tomas fancied he could hear them. The brothers had struck a bargain with the farmers in the lowland villages: one tree for a sack of barley, one fruit for every winter. Tomas had carried the terms in his head for a month, reciting them on the stairs like a psalm.

The sun broke over the eastern peaks as he reached the old shepherd's cairn. Light ran down the slopes in stripes, each ridge throwing its shadow across the next, until the whole range looked combed. He stopped to breathe and found, wrapped in the oilcloth at the root, a flat grey stone with one word scratched on it in the abbot's careful hand: here. Beneath it, smaller, was a line he had not expected. Plant it where the sun clears the ridge first. Not in the orchard. You will know the place.

He knelt where the light first touched the cairn, worked the frozen soil with his fingers until it gave, and set the quince in with the grey stone beneath its roots. When the sun stood fully over the ridge he sat back on his heels, cold to the bone, and watched the last shadows draw off the valley like a tide.
