Tree of life design on pale skin
Botanical · Mixed · Photo
A circular tree of life design sits at the centre of the frame, with fine branches spreading upwards and roots reaching downwards. The linework is dense and detailed, with the upper canopy shaded in magenta and purple that fades into dark grey and black towards the roots. The pale, textured background with soft pink tones suggests skin, and the tattoo is centred with plenty of empty space around it.

The council van idles at the kerb on Mercer Lane, its hazard lights blinking orange across the wet paving, and you stand beside the sycamore with a clipboard you have not yet looked at. Tomorrow the tree comes down. Someone in an office across the river has decided its roots have lifted enough flags to be a liability, and the paperwork is signed, stamped and filed under a name you will never meet.

You pull off your gloves and press your palm to the bark. It is cold and faintly damp, and under the streetlight the crown above you is a round dark mass of branches, each one splitting into twigs, each twig into threads finer than the wire on a fence. Your grandmother used to say a tree was really an upside-down thing, its true self hidden underground where nobody bothered to look. You never believed her until you knelt at the base and saw the roots, crawling under the kerb, down through the drain grate, reaching for the old brook that still runs beneath the city.
Nobody rings you when a tree is fine. So at half one you walk the gutter with a torch, tracing the roots the way you would trace a river on a map, until you find where one of them has cracked the clay pipe and drunk from it. Water is seeping out, bright and steady, into the dark.
You switch off the torch. Then you write one word on the clipboard, under the box marked action required, and underline it twice: Leave.
