Black and grey dotwork tattoo of a pine tree beside a crescent moon inside a circle, on the thigh above the knee.

Pine tree and moon in a dotwork circle

Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A pine tree stands in the lower centre of a circular design, with a small pale moon in the upper left. The scene is built from stippled dots, which create soft shading in the sky and denser texture for the tree's branches. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against pale skin, with framed artwork of an owl and a floral print in the background.

Pull your chairs in, the lot of you, before the moon clears the gasworks chimney. Once it's up, it always wants to be looked at instead of listened to, and I've a story that needs both.

Behind the Lusk Street bakery there was a yard no wider than a bus, and in it stood a single Scots pine. Nobody planted it. A carter's boy dropped a cone in the coal dust in 1931 and the rain did the rest. Mrs Ada Lusk, who ran the ovens and had no patience for weeds, meant to pull it out the first spring. She didn't. She tied a length of string round its trunk and told the coal man to mind his boots.

The tree grew the way things do when nobody's watching, too fast and a bit crooked. By the war it was taller than the bakery roof, and the sparrows of three parishes came to argue in it. On clear nights, Ada swore, the moon sat in the top branches like a pale bun on a plate, and anyone who stood in that yard long enough could hear the needles hiss with no wind at all.

The council sent a man with a saw in the autumn of 1958. He stood in the yard with his hat in his hand, looked up for a long while, then walked back to his van without a word. Ada never said what he'd seen. Her grandson still keeps the string in a biscuit tin. And if you go past at midnight, you can see the moon caught in that crown, small and bright, exactly where it was always going to be.
