Tree with roots on lower back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a woman seen from behind, with her hair up and one hand on her head, wearing a white top and black lace underwear. A black ink tree with a full canopy and spreading roots sits on her lower back, on the side near the hip. The image is sepia toned, so the tattoo appears in dark greys and black against lighter skin and fabric.

In the years after the grid failed, the last orchard on the Severn stood alone among the rusted pylons. Old Brannoc said its roots had drunk from the buried tunnels since before the sea came up, and that anyone who laid a hand on its bark would hear the river talking underground. Nobody believed him except the children, who dared each other to press their ears to the trunk at low tide.

Mara came up from the salt flats with a sack of seed-stones and a debt to pay the ferry-keepers. She was no fool about roots. She knew a tree this old did not give up its water for the asking, so she dug a hand's depth into the mud at its foot and found the first root as thick as a man's arm, grey and crosshatched like a net. She followed it down with a knife and a bowl of lamp oil, and it branched, and branched again, until the roots were fine as hair and each one ran toward a different drowned street.
On the seventh night the roots began to hum. Mara sat with her back against the bark and counted the notes the way her mother had taught her, one for each ring of the trunk. At the end of the count the ground opened a finger's width and a voice came up through it, asking what she was willing to carry down.
She gave it her seed-stones, one at a time, and the roots took each one and dropped it deeper. In the morning the ferry-keepers came for their money and found the sack empty, and above the tree a ring of pale green had opened in the canopy, as if a second sun had been planted there. Brannoc said that was the fair price. Mara said nothing, and went back to the mud to listen.
