A large floral design of a peony bloom, leaves and filigree scrollwork covers the back, with a smaller tattoo visible on the upper arm. The subject is cropped at the shoulders and hips, with high-waisted black trousers at the bottom of the frame.

You are the last one still tending the walled garden at Harrowgate Keep, though the keep itself lost its roof three winters ago and the county has stopped sending letters about it. The peonies were planted by a countess who wanted something soft against all that grey stone. They have outlasted her, her steward and the ledger that once listed their names. Every June you cut the heaviest heads before the rain can bruise them, and carry them through the breach in the curtain wall to the chapel, where the altar has no cloth left to hide the damp.

Tomas comes up on Thursdays with the cart, supposedly to check the mortar on the gatehouse. Mostly he watches you work and tells you the bloom is the size of a child's head this year. He says the leaves have started climbing the arrow slits. You tell him to leave the slits alone. Bindweed has already found the spiral stair to the solar, curling round each step as neatly as lace on a cuff, and you have stopped pulling it. It is the only thing at Harrowgate still climbing towards anything.

On the last evening of June a letter arrives in the steward's cramped hand. The estate is sold, the walls will come down by autumn, and the garden will be levelled for six houses with numbered doors. You read it twice on the battlement, then go down and cut every bloom that is left. You fill the cart until the wheels groan, and Tomas stops pretending to look at the mortar.

He asks what you intend to do with so many flowers. You tell him you are going to lay them across the chapel flagstones, the outlines of petal and leaf picked out in dark stone, and leave the door open so the whole county can see what the countess made. Then you walk in and start arranging, and the last light comes through the window and throws the shadows of the leaves across the floor like ink.
