Triangle and circle scrollwork on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo of an equilateral triangle with a circle and vertical line inside it, set within ornate filigree scrollwork that curls around the triangle's sides and base. The linework is clean and even, with solid black fill on the central details and no visible shading. The design sits on the inner wrist against pale skin, with a yellow patterned sleeve and a desk and papers in the background.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the lamp, it's the last of the oil. Three brothers came down to the Hollin Ford on a night like this, when the river was up and the toll-keeper had gone home to his supper. The eldest was a ferryman's son, the middle one a clockmaker's apprentice, and the youngest had nothing but a limp and a grudge against his own shadow. There was no bridge, and the water was talking the way water does when it means to take somebody.

The ford had a keeper, though nobody ever saw her face. She would sell passage only for a thing you could not spend, and she gave each brother a choice of three gifts. The eldest took a stick of ash that never broke, so he could win any quarrel he cared to start. The middle one asked for a small stone that could call back the dead for an hour. He used it the very first night to bring back his wife's mother, and by morning he could not remember the sound of his own wife's laugh, because he had spent it all on staring at the old woman's face. The youngest asked for a cloak of grey cloth that would hide him from anyone who meant him harm. The keeper laughed and said, that one is cheap, and let him have it for nothing.
So the youngest wrapped himself in it and walked across the black water with his feet dry and his breath held. On the far bank he found the keeper waiting, sitting on a stone with the other two gifts laid beside her in the mud. She asked him what he had done with the cloak, and he said he had kept it, and she said good, then nobody will ever find you, and he understood at last what he had paid.
The youngest came back over the ford the next morning, folded the cloak into a neat triangle, and laid it on the water. The river took it without a sound. Now go to bed, all of you, and leave the lamp burning.
