Anchor with bow on a wrist
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black anchor with a bow tied around its shank, drawn in thick outline with solid black fill and some grey shading. The design sits centred on the inside of a light-skinned wrist, with a flip-flop visible at the edge of the frame. The ink looks glossy and slightly raised, so it may be a temporary or freshly applied design.

The rain had been coming sideways across the fish market since six, and Maureen Tully had stopped pretending the awning did anything. She stood under the far end by the ice tubs with a paper cup of tea going cold, watching the boats nod against the quay wall beyond the stalls. Her brother Denny was meant to be selling the last of the cod, but he had disappeared an hour ago with a girl from the chandlery, and the cod was still in its crates.

She found the ribbon in the drawer of her father's old tackle box that morning, a length of navy satin gone soft as a moth's wing, tied around nothing. He had kept it since the year her mother went. Maureen had never asked what it was for. Now she turned it over in her pocket with her thumb, the way you turn a coin you are not sure is real, and thought about how an anchor is only useful when it is holding something down.
Denny came back at noon, damp and grinning, with a bag of chips he had clearly bought with someone else's money. He dropped the bag on the crate beside her and looked at the cod, then at her face, and his grin went quiet. She held out the ribbon. He did not take it at first. Then he did, and wound it twice round his wrist, and pulled it into a bow with his teeth.
"Right," he said. "Let's sell some fish."
The rain kept on. They sold every crate by three.
