Compass rose with swirls on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A compass rose sits at the centre of the design, with a fine outer ring and a bold cross of points. Curling scrolls and small leaf-like shapes surround it on both sides, drawn in solid black ink with some grey shading. The tattoo is photographed straight on against a plain light background with a red object at the edge of the frame.

The last generator coughs its way quiet past the dog track, and Mrs Oddie is already waiting in the back of the wagon with a sheet of vellum pinned flat by four tea caddies. She doesn't look up when you come in. "Every town we've ever pitched in is on there," she says, "and you're going to find the one that isn't."

You bend over the drawing. Someone has ruled a fine outer ring in ink, then a bold cross of points that reaches almost to the edges, and around it the scrolls curl like smoke off a hob. Small leaves sprout wherever the cartographer's hand rested for a moment. Her husband drew it the winter the big wheel came down in the Fens. He never once said which way was north, only that the needle always pointed back to the last fair they'd left behind.
You trace the outer ring with one finger. The cloth smells of damp sawdust and candle wax. "Where's the line for home?" you ask. She taps the centre, where the points meet. "There isn't one. You keep walking until the scrolls stop."
Outside, the lorry engine turns over twice before it catches. You roll the vellum tight, tie it with a shoelace, and step down onto the car park, where the grass has already gone silver with frost and the road runs off in the one direction nobody has drawn yet.
