Triangle and wings across a woman's upper back
Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with dark, tousled hair is photographed from behind against a pale background, wearing a sheer black top with a cut-out back. The upper back carries a solid black triangle with a crescent above it, a vertical line through its base, and a winged motif on the right shoulder blade, with more ornamental wing-like linework lower down. The image is in black and grey, with bold solid fills and fine detailed linework, and the composition centres the tattoos with the hands resting on the lower back.

The big top had only three poles left by the second winter, and Maud Harrow counted them every morning before she fed the horses. The canvas had gone the colour of weak tea. Where the patches met at the crown, someone had stitched a black triangle to hold the seam, and that was the tent's whole face now, the thing people saw from the lane.

The old bird-girl lived in the wagon behind the ring. Her name was Ysolde, and she kept a pair of painted wings nailed to a board above her bed, because the real ones had been sold for a sack of oats in the bad year. Every evening she told Maud the same thing: a circus is a pyramid of promises, and when the bottom stone goes, the top stone rolls off into the field.
Maud did not believe her. She believed in the moon, which hung over the tent each night as a thin paring, and in the ropes, which still held when she climbed them. So on the night the wind took the second pole, she went up to the crown with a needle between her teeth and mended the triangle by moonlight while the wagons creaked below.
By morning the wind had dropped. Ysolde stood in the mud with her hands folded at the small of her back, looking up. "It was never the poles," she said. "It was always whoever was willing to hold the canvas up." Then she went back to bed, and Maud went to find the horses, and the tent stood one more season.
