Back tattoos under wet black hair
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person is photographed from behind against a plain pale background, with long, wet, dark hair hanging over the head and face. Bare shoulders and upper back show black ink tattoos, including a dark figure-like shape on each shoulder blade area and fine grey linework extending down the right side. The image is monochrome, with soft lighting and a centred composition.

The tide had been out nine hours when Maren Ashdown finally dragged the tow-line up the slipway at Lowestoft Reach, and seawater still ran off the drowned cranes in long grey ropes. Nobody on the Reach asked where a salvage crew had been. They looked at the ink on a diver's shoulders, counted the figures, and decided how much the cargo was worth.

Maren's own figures were older than the Reach. Two dark hooded shapes sat across her shoulder blades, drawn by a man who had worked the flooded Thames before the barrier gave way. The old divers called them the Wardens. Each one had been added after a dive she came back from, and she could no longer remember which dive had cost her the second. Fine grey lines ran down her side like tidal channels on a chart.
Tobi, her apprentice, sat on an upturned crate with the chart spread across his knees. He had found a dry hatch on the Harwich side, the one the Wardens had always kept shut. 'It's the archive,' he said. 'Paper, Maren. Whole libraries of it.' She told him the hatch stayed shut for a reason. He argued until the lamp guttering on the pier threw his shadow across the water, then went quiet.
At dawn she went down alone. The hatch was cold and the paper inside had swollen to stone, but on the lowest shelf lay a single ledger of names, each one marked with a small dark figure like her own. Beside the last entry someone had written in pencil: returned. She climbed out, pulled the hatch shut behind her, and did not tell Tobi what she had read.
