Colour forearm tattoos and finger tattoos
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A person in a brown fedora and grey t-shirt covers their face with both hands, displaying tattoos on the forearms and fingers. The forearm tattoos include figurative and portrait-like designs with areas of red, green and blue ink alongside darker outlines and shading. The plain background is a patterned curtain of stylised trees, and the photograph is taken at close range with soft indoor light.

The curtain had hung in the back room of the Gull Street laundry since before the war, and every April Mrs Odile Penhallow took it down, beat the dust out of it on the washing line and hung it up again. Its trees were not quite trees. Their canopies spiralled like knitted wool, green and blue and a stubborn red, and the trunks rose on long black stalks that stopped just short of the ceiling.

Her nephew Davey came for it the spring the ink man arrived from Penzance. The ink man had a face on each forearm, a woman with a swan's neck on one side and a sailor with a red beard on the other, and he wanted the curtain as a backdrop for photographing his work. Odile said no, then said yes, on the condition that he told her what the sailor had done to earn such a beard.
He said nothing. He only tapped the blue tree in the corner, where a squirrel had been stitched in brown thread by someone who was clearly not sure of squirrels. "That one's Mam," Davey said. "She never got the tail right." Odile laughed until she had to sit down on the mangle.
When the photographs came back in June, the trees were the brightest thing in them. The faces on the ink man's arms looked as if they were trying to see past the edge of the frame, hoping to catch sight of that squirrel.
