The snow has drifted over the lower steps again, and you are kneeling at the lamp-room door with a bucket of sand when the grey shape comes up from the shingle. You do not reach for the flare gun. Your father always said the island had its own tenants and that a keeper's job was to log them honestly, so you write it down in pencil before you do anything else: wolf, north stair, half past four, not hungry yet.

It settles on the iron landing as though it has paid rent there for years. Its ruff is silver at the edges and dark at the throat, and when the beam swings out over the water and back, its eyes take the light and give it back to you a second late. You count the sweeps with it. Eleven seconds each, the way the mechanism was set in 1891, the way it has been set every night since you were a girl sitting on the bottom step with a biscuit tin of matches.

The relief boat comes in March with a man in a sealskin hat who says the light is going automatic and the cottage will be let to someone who wants a view. He is not unkind about it. He takes your logbook and reads the last entry twice, then looks at the stair, where the prints of something large are pressed into the wet grit and already softening.

You walk the path down with your bag on your shoulder. At the bottom you turn, and above you the lamp is still turning, and across the dark water, for one sweep of the beam, you see the wolf standing on the top step with its head raised, keeping the watch you can no longer keep.
