Ornate elephant mandala on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed elephant head with a curled trunk is filled with mandala-style rosettes, lace-like patterns and swirling ornament. The linework and fine stippled shading are in black ink only, with the trunk and ears built from repeated dots and fine lines. The design wraps around the forearm and sits against a lighter, slightly blurred gravel background.

Dear Nell,

The rain has been at the market since Tuesday and nobody has bought a thing except the man with the umbrellas, who has sold four hundred of them at double. I have kept the lace under the tarpaulin the way you showed me, rolled in tissue, and it has come through unspotted. The elephant panel is still pinned at the back of the stall. Mr Okafor asked again if it was for sale. I told him it was waiting for someone who would know what the rosettes were counting.
You will remember the pattern book your grandmother kept, the one with the dots that you said were just dots. I have been going through it at night with the lamp turned low. Each rosette is a ring of eight, each ring holds another ring, and if you follow the trunk from the tip inward it curls seven times before it stops. I think she was drawing the way back to the middle, though I could be wrong. She never finished a sentence she did not want to finish.
Yesterday a girl came by with a sketchbook and asked whether I did the old lace-work on skin. I laughed at her. Then she turned the page and showed me an elephant with a mandala pressed onto its head, every line worked in black dots, and I had to sit down on the crate. It was our elephant. Not copied, I think, just the same hand reaching the same place from another direction.
I have kept a tissue-wrapped corner back for you. Come home when the weather breaks, and bring the book. The trunk on the panel has one curl unfinished, and I would rather you finished it than I did.
Love, Maud
