Tribal back and shoulder tattoos

Back · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows the bare back of a person with arms outstretched against a black background, with the head cropped out of frame. Bold black tribal linework forms a central spiral motif on the upper back, with matching swirl designs on both shoulders and a symmetrical panel across the lower back. The ink is solid and dark with no colour, and the composition is centred and evenly lit.

The county never gave me a map of the Harrow Flats, only a tin box of survey pegs and a grader that pulled left. So I drove the road by the pegs, one after another, and the pegs kept leading me round in circles.

By the third week I'd stopped arguing with the hardpan. Every morning I started at the outer peg and worked inward, cutting a curl of gravel around the salt pan, tighter each lap, until the centre was a dry bowl about the width of a bus. Hilda from the diner at Coyle's Cross brought me coffee in a jam jar and said the old prospectors did the same, that a spiral was how you got lost on purpose and found at the end. I told her I was only following the pegs.

On the last morning the wind dropped flat and I could see the whole thing from the rise: arms of road reaching out toward the mesas on either side, the spiral coiled hard in the middle like a sleeping snake, the scrub curving back to match it. It looked exactly like the rug in my mother's hall, the one she said was a sun and my father said was a fingerprint of the earth.

I climbed down, pulled the last peg, and drove the grader straight out across the bowl, breaking every curve I had laid. The dust rose gold behind me. Hilda was waiting at the cross with the jar. 'Well?' she said. 'It's a road,' I told her. 'Just not the one they asked for.'
