Tribal wings across a back
Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large pair of stylised wings covers the back, with the feathers built from bands of triangles, chevrons, scallops and curved lines. The solid black linework and dense patterning are set against areas of bare skin, which give the design its shape. The image is in black and grey, with a dark background that makes the outlines stand out.

The net came over the gunwale heavy with mackerel, and Dad swore at it the way he swore at the weather, with feeling and no real expectation of change. I was sixteen that summer and had been mending since I could hold a bone needle, so I knew a torn mesh by its sound before I saw the hole.

Old Ivy Penhale ran the mending shed at the top of Carrack Cove, where six boats tied up and argued over whose catch was best. Her patterns were older than the harbour wall. She drew them in chalk on the shed door before she let anyone near a needle: bands of triangles for the gulls riding the swell, chevrons for the tide running under the keel, scalloped edges where the lines turned back on themselves. 'Every knot's a promise to come home,' she said, and then made me unpick my first border because one triangle leaned.
In November the wind came round to the north-east within an hour, and the Brenda Jane did not come back. We walked the shingle until dark with paraffin lamps. Ivy sat on an upturned creel and worked a spare net by feel, her hands quicker than I had ever seen them, and when the boat finally limped in on the morning tide, it was towed by a line Ivy had knotted in the small hours.
Her chalk wings were gone from the door by spring, rained off, and the lads painted the shed blue. But the net she worked that night still hangs on the hook by the window, its border stitched in two great curves, each band packed tight and dark against the open weave. Nobody cuts it down. You can see the light through the gaps, and that is the point of it.
