Tribal back tattoo down the spine

Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A bare male back is covered by a large black tribal design that spreads across the shoulder blades and narrows into a twisting column along the spine. The bold, solid black linework has sharp hooked points and swirling curves with little shading. The skin tone is warm and the plain white tiled background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dunmore had been watching the cook's boy try to splice a three-strand line for two days, and by the fortieth day out of Valparaíso the boy had got it right only in his sleep. Nobody on the Estrella spoke about the doldrums any more. They spoke about the water in the casks, which tasted of tin, and about the tar pot, which Ada Kerrigan kept on the galley stove so she could thin it for the seams.

She had her own way of working. Where the others bound a rope's end with twine and hoped, she unlaid the strands, tucked each one back on itself and let the lay twist up into a shape, black and hooked at every turn where the tar caught. Dunmore asked her once what it was for. She said a splice was only a promise that two ends would hold, and that a good one looked like it had never been broken.

On the forty-third morning the mainstay parted in a squall off the Horn, and the whole watch stood round the lashed-down wreck of it while the wind tore at their oilskins. Ada went up the shrouds with a fid in her teeth and a coil of tarred line across her shoulder. Nobody thought she would manage it. She didn't speak as she worked, only tugged, turned and tugged again, while the rope curled along the stay like a column of black ivy.

When the Estrella finally crept into Falmouth, the mate had the tarred splice cut out and framed for the owners. Ada took the offcut home in her sea chest, and Dunmore never learned whether she kept it to remember the storm or to remember how little she had been afraid.
